By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, El Salvador marked 1 year of anti-gang crackdown.
In March of 2022, after a surge in gang violence that left 62 dead in 1 day, the Nayib Bukele administration implemented the gang crackdown in an effort to reduce crime in the country.
The measure has been renewed every month since then.
To date, a total of 66,417 people have been detained, the Associated Press reports.
Human rights groups and activists continue to criticize the measure saying that there is an alarming rate of rights violations.
