No charges yet for boat captain in death of American teen off San Pedro

By Aaron Humes: The Belize Port Authority is still to determine whether a boat captain of San Pedro Town will be charged in the death of 17-year-old Logan Pratt, an American who was apparently run over in the waters off Ambergris Caye in February.

The teen and her mother were swimming in a heavily trafficked area for boats when a vessel known as the ‘Mathew’, captained by Jesse Ѕmіth, wаѕ rеturnіng frоm а tоur оf thе Мехісо Rосkѕ аrеа аnd арраrеntlу ѕtruсk bоth wоmеn аt аrоund 2:15 on February 14, ѕtорріng only whеn hе hеаrd ѕсrеаmѕ frоm bеhіnd hіm.

Acting Ports Commissioner Darlin Gaitan said today that what happened is in maritime parlance known as a ‘user conflict situation’ – potentially complicating matters.

Police are also part of the investigation and the matter will likely go to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for final input on any charge.

Defenders of Smith insist it was an accident and that he should not be charged.
