Belizean traversing through Mexico victim of extortion

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Last night, TV Escarcega of Escarcega, Mexico reported that Belizean-American Eduardo Usher was traveling through Mexico when he was reportedly extorted by the Guardia Nacional.

Usher told the local tv station, that he was stopped and the officers told him that the vehicles don’t have permission to traverse Mexico and threatened to detain him.

However, Usher produced the documents and called his agency who explained that he had relevant documents to travel through Mexico.

Usher says they then told him that they can help him but they searched his pockets and took $3000 pesos from him.

“They put their hands in my pocket and took my money and they took away my keys and all my papers. They then put me in their truck and then, they wanted $200 US. So they made me open my bank account and since I was not able to do the transaction, they say $3000 pesos was not enough. So they saw a 50 inch tv in the vehicle and they said they will take the tv. I refused and they then said that they would detain me. They even threatened to punch me. I am very frightened because I was alone,” Usher said.

After the video went viral, Usher says that the matter had been dealt with.

BBN spoke to another transmigrante who told us that they are often victims of extortion by Mexican law enforcement authorities, who demand money and items they are bringing to Belize.
