International News: Taiwan President arrives in U.S., China threatens reprisal

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen arrived in New York for a visit that prompted China to threaten reprisal if President Tsai meets with House speaker Kevin McCarthy, the Associated French Press reports.

President Tsai stopped over in the U.S. en route to Belize and Guatemala for a “Meeting Democratic Partners, Fostering Shared Prosperity” tour.

On her return, she is scheduled to stop at Los Angeles and meet with McCarthy.

There have been heightened tensions between Taiwan and China since China views Taiwan as its territory and has long vowed to “reunify” the self-governing democratic island.

China has since warned that it is “resolutely opposed” to any meeting between Tsai and McCarthy and said the country would take “resolute measures to fight back” if it goes ahead.

“If (Tsai) engages with US House Speaker McCarthy, it will be another provocation that seriously violates the One China principle, undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian said.

However, the U.S. responded saying that China should not use the Taiwan’s president’s visit as a reason to step up aggression.
