By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize has exported 7,532 head of cattle to Guatemala and Mexico in the first quarter of 2023.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE), 6,179 animals have been exported to Guatemala and 1,092 to Mexico in the first three months from January to March 27.

At an average of 600 pounds per animal and $2,000 per pound the exports to Guatemala ascended to $9,038,400 while the exports to Mexico at $2.25 per pound summed $1.474,200.

That gives a grand total of $10,512,600 for the first quarter.

Exports to Mexico are very formal with extreme control by the Mexican Animal Health Authority, Senasica, which has now permitted exports from all of Belize. Up to recently, exports could only be done through vetted corrals in the Orange Walk District.

Guatemalan exports are more informal and are done through Bullet Tree in Cayo and Jalacte in Toledo to Guatemala. Exports through Bullet Tree totalled 6,179 and through Jalacte, 1,092.

To Mexico, the exports go through the Northern border.

In 2022, Belize exported 4,995 head of cattle to the SuKarne company in Mexico. That totalled approximately 2.997 million lbs. valued at approximately $6.45 million.
