By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On March 29, 2023, Prime Minister John Briceno, the Ministry of National Security and Belize Coast Guard held a ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the Coast Guard Sector South Headquarters in Big Creek.
“Our aim is to improve our services in our southern waters by providing maritime safety, maritime security and marine resource protection,” the Belize Coast Guard noted.
The Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence and Border Security, Florencio Marin Jr, Minister of Transport, Rodwel Ferguson, Managing Director of the Port of Big Creek, Zaid Flores, and Commandant of the Coast Guard Rear Admiral Elton Bennett ceremonially broke grounds at the Port for the commencement the construction of the headquarters.
“The facility will be constructed over a three year period and at its completion will provide increased security for the southern Belizean waters in the vicinity of the Big Creek Port in Independence Village,” the Prime Minister noted.
PM Briceno also thanked the Big Creek Port who donated the land for the construction of the base.
The project comes at a cost of about $800,000.
