International News: Prayers for 86-year-old Pope Francis after being hospitalized

By Aaron Humes: Roman Catholic U.S. President Joe Biden announced this afternoon that “[First Lady] Jill and I are keeping Pope Francis in our prayers and send our best wishes for his swift and full recovery. The world needs Pope Francis.” President Biden and his wife joined millions of Catholics across the world who were keeping Pope Francis in their prayers for recovery.

According to the BBC, the pontiff, 86, could be discharged from a Rome hospital “in the coming days” after seeing “marked improvement in his health” following a battle with bronchitis, after being admitted to Gemelli Hospital for what was initially said to be a scheduled check-up.

After a good night’s rest according to Vatican spokespeople, the Holy Father got some work done this afternoon local time, along with more rest and prayer.

Italian news agency Ansa reported nurses were optimistic he would be out of the hospital in time for Palm Sunday, ahead of what will be a very busy week conducting various events and services in connection with Holy Week and Easter, the most solemn time of the Christian year.

The former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected pope 10 years ago this month but has been battling multiple health issues, including knee pain that has kept him confined to a wheelchair. He has previously hinted that like his late predecessor Pope Benedict XVI, he could leave the papacy if the schedule got to be too much for his health.
