Mauricio Barbosa receives 26 years sentence for 3 counts of rape, will spend 9 years only in prison

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Forty-seven-year-old Mauricio Barbosa has been sentenced to 26 years in prison having been convicted of three counts of rape.

Barbosa appeared in the High Court of Belize for a sentencing hearing today before Justice Antionette Moore.

The trial-without-jury commenced in Corozal in late February and finished on March 3, with sentencing reserved for today. Barbosa received three 9-year sentences (less one year) for the rape but since the sentences will run concurrently, he will only spend a total of 9 years in prison.

The incident occurred in August 2015. The victim made a report to police that Barbosa had raped her, shortly after Barbosa allegedly stabbed her brother.

In his defense, Barbosa said he had consensual sex with the victim, and claimed that she maliciously made the rape accusation.

Justice Moore determined that the victim’s testimony was credible and found Barbosa guilty.
