Posted: Thursday, March 30, 2023. 2:18 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, 11 women cane farmers completed the first Women Farmer Field School Program.

Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, Rosanna Briceno attended the closing ceremony.

“Women cane farmers play a critical role in this industry. Their contributions are often overlooked and undervalued, yet they make up 41% of the 5000 cane farmers in Northern Belize, that is 2,041 women cane farmers,” the Special Envoy said.

“Investing in the education and increasing the participation of women in the agricultural sector is crucial for embracing equity as well as for a national economy and development that is inclusive and more resilient,” she added.

The program was sponsored by the Hershey’s Learn to Grow program.

The Hershey Learn to Grow sustainable farming program trains farmers in sustainable agriculture practices to responsibly grow and harvest sugar cane.
