By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Four Belizean cyclists and six foreigners will be riding the 32nd Annual PUMA Women’s Cross Country Cycling Classic from San Ignacio to Belize City on Sunday, April 2. That’s one less than last year, but the main difference is the number of foreigners. Last year, only two United States cyclists rode though they dominated the race: champion Katy Sorrell and her Team Cardinal teammate Morgan Stern.

This year, Champion Sorrell returns riding for Team Cardinal. Stern will not be competing but US rider Jessica Chong from Bike Works P/b Fred Beans will.

2019 champion Kaya Cattouse, who didn’t ride last year because of commitments with her professional team LA Sweat, is back bringing along Mexican teammate Mariana Valdez.

Two other Mexicans, namely Ana Laura García and Diana Valeria Rodríguez of Team Navecamp, and Bermudian rider Caitlin Conyers from team Winners Edge complete the foreign legion.

The other three Belizean riders are sisters Patricia and Paulita Chavarria, and Kedisha Francis. Patricia and Kedisha are riding independently while Paulita is riding under the Team Gonz banner.

Last year, Paulita was fifth and Patricia was sixth. Francis finished seventh.

Gabrielle Gabourel who was fourth last year behind Alicia Thompson, now president of the Cycling Federation of Belize, is not competing this year. Neither is Thompson.

Fiona Castillo, who was eighth last year, is not riding either. Nor are Marinette Flowers, Gabrielle Lovell, and Nathalie Lovell.

Organized by the Cycling Federation of Belize, the 32nd Annual PUMA Women’s Cross Country Cycling Classic starts at 8:00 am on Sunday at Columbus Park next to the Hawkesworth Bridge downtown San Ignacio and finishes after 70 milers at the Digi Park on Barrack Road in Belize City.
