By Breaking Belize News Staff: The murder trial of Jared Ranguy became even more complicated this week, as the trial judge, Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sancroft, announced today that he would be recusing himself from the case.
Sandcroft made the announcement today, after granting a three-month adjournment to the case, setting the next hearing date for June 26.
He said “I am not comfortable with how things have played out. Yesterday I detailed what has happened in the case…”
Justice Sandcroft allowed the three-month adjournment at the request of Ranguy, to allow for his new attorney, Godfrey Smith to be able to take on the case and adequately prepare. Ranguy, who is now on his 7th attorney representing him, said during his court appearance on Thursday that he would be dropping his court-appointed attorney, Orson Elrington, because he felt pressured into accepting a guilty plea.
Today another attorney, Leslie Hamilton, was to be appointed as Ranguy’s defense, but asked to be recused as he had a connection to two of the deceased, which posed a conflict of interest.
Ranguy was recently declared by a doctor to be fit to return to the general prison population. He stands accused of the murder of his mother Karen Skeen Vellos, sister Teena Vellos and stepfather Richard Vellos, back in November 2012.
