By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The University of Belize (UB) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) on Thursday, March 30, signed a memorandum of understanding to cement their institutional collaboration.

According to the University of Belize (UB), the agreement is expected to enhance the capacities of both entities.

“The MAFSE will offer short-term competency-based training that will be developed and conducted in areas such as horticulture, beekeeping, extension, agro-processing, and marketing,” UB said in a social media post.

“This initiative will provide students with hands-on training in sustainable crop and livestock production practices, value addition, entrepreneurship education, and skills development to increase knowledge-based skills in general agriculture.”

The University of Belize explained that MAFSE’s expertise will support the educational institution in implementing its field practice and workplace program and course.

“This activity will be formalized through a separate letter of agreement,” UB said.

In return, the University of Belize said it will provide short-term training to MAFSE personnel in areas such as research methods, best practices in agriculture, technical writing skills, business plans, and information technology.

This training should assist the Agriculture Ministry in enhancing their administrative and technical capacity.

“UB is grateful for this partnership and looks forward to building its capacity to contribute more to the development of Belize’s agricultural sector,” UB said.

“The University of Belize and the Ministry of Agriculture Food Security and Enterprise will cooperate in collective efforts and resources, to build capacity, share and promote knowledge transfer, expertise, data and information to strengthen the common interests and respective missions of both institutions,” MAFSE said in a social media post.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at UB’s main campus in Belmopan by UB President Dr. Vincent Palacio and MAFSE Chief Executive Officer Servulo Baeza.
