By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: This week, Belize witnessed a 10-cent increase in the price of chicken, an essential and economical protein source for Belizean families. The cost per pound rose from $3 to $3.10. Agriculture Minister Abelardo Mai attributed this hike primarily to the rising costs of goods worldwide, which in turn impacts other food products.

Mai explained that although Belize produces its own corn, the global increase in corn prices, driven by the U.S. as the world’s largest producer, has a ripple effect on local prices. “You might think that Belize is an isolated case, producing its own corn. However, when the price of corn goes up in the U.S., it affects prices everywhere else,” Mai stated.

The minister has requested his Ministry to analyze the impact of rising commodity prices, including corn. He noted that when the prices of corn and soybeans increase, it affects a range of other commodities that rely on animal feed, such as poultry, pork, and eggs. While a rise in rice prices directly impacts consumers, the increase in corn and soybean prices has wider consequences on various goods.
