By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Friday, March 31, 2023, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen arrived in Guatemala as part of her “Meeting Democratic Partners, Fostering Shared Prosperity” tour.
The Governments of Taiwan and Guatemala reaffirmed their commitment to mutual support.
According to Prensa Libre, the Guatemalan President, Alejandro Giammattei and President Tsai announced a cooperation agreement.
President Giammattei noted that through friendship with Taiwan, the countries have worked together and transformed plans to actions for the benefit of the people of Guatemala and Taiwan.
“At the bilateral level there are several factors that make our relationship solid, and I would like to particularly emphasize academic exchange programs, appreciation and mutual respect for culture, robust commercial diplomacy, coincidences on the location strategic geography of both countries and the principles and values that we openly promote,” Giammattei said.
President Tsai noted that “Guatemala is a solid diplomatic ally of Taiwan and in recent years our cooperation has continued to deepen in areas such as health, the economy, trade, as well as basic infrastructure.”
The Taiwanese President said the new agreement will allow greater diversification and innovation for technical cooperation between the 2 nations.
“We are allies and democratic partners who share the same values for freedom and human rights,” she added.
Guatemala and Belize continue to support and promote Taiwan’s participation in important and international events and organizations.
