Taiwanese president to touch down in Belize Sunday afternoon

Posted: Sunday, April 2, 2023. 3:18 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen is scheduled to arrive in Belize later this afternoon around 4 p.m., completing her ten-day tour to the United States, Belize, and Guatemala.

The visit comes following the defection of Honduras to the camp of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), leaving Belize and Guatemala as the Republic of China (Taiwan)’s only Central American allies, and increasing pressure from Beijing which has been issuing threats over potential meetings with American officials on U.S. soil.

Per Cabinet Secretary Ambassador Stuart Leslie, the formal arrival occurs at the Philip Goldson International Airport in Ladyville when her China Airlines flight touches down and she is greeted by Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam and CEO of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Amalia Mai. In the evening there will be a formal activity with Belize’s Taiwanese community.

The highlight of the visit is on Monday, following meetings with the Governor-General and Prime Minister John Briceno, when she addresses a joint session of the National Assembly in Belmopan. Back in the City, the Prime Minister’s Office will host a special dinner in her honour at the Museum of Belize grounds in Belize City.

On Tuesday before her departure, she will take in a cultural exhibition on women.

President Tsai is expected to be formally handed a copy of the written declaration of Belize’s support for Taiwan passed by motion in both Houses of the National Assembly. At the same time, according to Ambassador Leslie, there will be an unveiling of the renderings of the new hospital complex in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, to be funded with Taiwanese support.
