By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Recently a group of 20 Belizean technicians and producers from Belize’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise and the private sector attended a four-day soybean training seminar in Muna, Yucatan, from March 28 to March 31 as part of the Strategic Project for the Bilateral Productive Strengthening Mexico-Belize.

And though they were in Mexico mostly to learn from their Mexican counterparts regarding the cultivation of soybeans, Mexico’s National Institute for Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research (INIFAP), said in a social media post that the collaboration with Belize’s Ministry of Agriculture, through strategic planning, seeks to contribute to increased productivity of four crops, namely soybean, soursop, coconuts, and pitahaya, not only in Belize but also in Mexico.

INIFAP pointed out that the strategic planning involves the generation of potential productivity crop maps, workshops for producers in medium and high potential areas to identify problems and training needs, and the setting up of demonstration modules.

The 20 Belizean toured INIFAP facilities in Muna, attended a theoretical-practical soybean production course, and joined Mexican producers at a Forum for the Technological Dissemination of Soybean Varieties at the Research Field Facilities in Uxmal.

At the Soybean Varieties Technological Dissemination Forum, Dr. Luis Ángel Rodríguez del Bosque, INIFAP’S Director General reiterated to the 250 attendees the Institute’s commitment to Mexican and Belizean producers. He also stressed that the validation process being conducted in Belize for the Huastecas soybean varieties generated by INIFAP is producing excellent results.

At the forum, the Belizean and Mexican participants witnessed a drone spraying demonstration.

According to INIFAP, its soy specialists discussed the problems, agronomic management, and advantages of the different varieties they are growing.

INIFAP said the forum also sought to identify alternative sources of grain supply for the domestic market to complement both countries’ goal of generating greater regional development through the strengthening of small producers.
