Judge awaiting social inquiry report to hand down sentencing to cop who stole $55,000 Hilux

Posted: Monday, April 3, 2023. 3:38 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: High Court of Belize Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft has adjourned the sentencing for interdicted police officer Virgil Perez.

Perez was convicted of theft on February 16; however, the social inquiry report, a process by which a convict is interviewed by a member of the Community Rehabilitation Department (CRD) to learn about his upbringing, and other social factors that may have brought the convict to crime, is still pending.

Court justices use these reports when considering sentences and since Perez’s report was not ready for his last court appearance, Justice Sandcroft adjourned the case to April 28.

Perez was convicted by a nine-member jury as the one who stole the $55,000 Toyota Hilux from the Belize diesel compound on the night of February 26, 2012.
