Leader of Opposition joins government in affirming solidarity with Taiwan

Posted: Monday, April 3, 2023. 7:27 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the leader of Belize’s opposition party, Shyne Barrow, announced his decision to join the government in welcoming Taiwan’s President, Dr. Tsai Ing-Wen. In doing so, he reiterated his party’s commitment to supporting a democratic Taiwan and strengthening the 33-year-old bilateral relations between Belize and Taiwan.

Barrow emphasized that the opposition and people of Belize stand in solidarity with the people and government of Taiwan, calling for Taiwan’s participation in all international organizations. He also stressed the importance of supporting Taiwan’s right to self-determination, noting that any threat to Taiwan’s sovereignty is a threat to democracy, freedom, and human rights everywhere.

Barrow expressed gratitude to the people and government of Taiwan for their significant investments in Belize’s education, healthcare, infrastructure, urban resilience, equality, and trade. He believes that it is imperative for democratic nations around the world to support Taiwan’s continued existence as a free, peaceful, and democratic nation.
