Police detain 12, including minors, after mass robbery and murder at Gracie Rock

Posted: Monday, April 3, 2023. 8:49 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: A Hattieville man was shot dead, another from Gracie Rock severely injured and multiple persons robbed at gunpoint in one of the quietest villages in all of Belize on Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Police responded to the area just before 6 p.m. Sunday and came across the body of 26-year-old Denver Montero, a mechanic of Hattieville. They were also informed that a Ryan Kerr of Gracie Rock, Belize District, had been transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds.

According to the police investigation, a group of persons was bathing in the Belize River when a group of 12 boys and men appeared and started to rob those present of their personal belongings. One of the men was armed with a pistol which he brandished and fired once in the air. After the robbery, the group proceeded up the river bank, and more shots were heard, after which Kerr was seen running and holding his stomach saying he had been shot. Kerr was rushed into the operating theatre for treatment.

Police acted on subsequent information and intercepted a grey Dodge Caravan between Miles 14 and 15, George Price Highway in Hattieville occupied by 12 boys and men, the youngest of whom was 12 years old and the oldest, the driver, 35, all from Belize City. They have been detained and police recovered various items which they allegedly saw the driver disposing of from the van and which have been identified as the property of those who were robbed at the riverside, as well as items inside the vehicle from the commission of the robbery. Police investigations continue.
