By Aaron Humes: In a time when it needs all the friends it can get, the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Tsai Ing-Wen, was this morning pleased, speaking at the National Assembly in Belmopan, to count Belize as one of them, and reiterate a “steadfast commitment to our bilateral partnership.”

And as she reiterated when she first addressed Belize’s Legislature five years ago, “the friendship between Taiwan and Belize is not built on empty promises or the political whims of our leadership. This is a friendship that, for the past 34 years, has led to results that have benefitted people from both our countries.”

Yet there are those, unnamed but lurking, whom she said “seek to insert a wedge into this friendship, [but] we have remained close because of our common values and our shared vision for a more prosperous and peaceful future. We will also continue to work together to demonstrate that democracies help one another and we deliver.”

The People’s Republic of China (PRC), advancing its claim on Taiwan’s territory, has put the squeeze on its efforts to participate in international organizations and poached multiple turncoats – but Belize has been steadfast and President Tsai formally recorded the Republic’s gratitude: “On behalf of the people of Taiwan, I want to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to the government of Belize, and all the members of the House and the Senate. Your unwavering friendship and support mean so much to us.”

President Tsai listed the continued efforts at bipartisan cooperation – infrastructure in critical areas; improving water quality and nutritious food supply as well as internet access in schools; support for the building of the San Pedro Town Community Hospital; a women’s empowerment project for vocational training that has impacted hundreds of households; and 500 scholarships for deserving students.

In trade, Taiwan has joined Belize’s top ten trading partners, currently mostly restricted to “personal favourite” Marie Sharp’s hot sauces but soon to include the likes of lobster, coffee and cacao.

And after 10 days in Guatemala, Belize and the United States, where she will meet U.S. officials on Wednesday despite warnings from Beijing, the President said she had been assured “that our relationship will continue to stand strong for decades to come” – and also that, COVID-19 aside, five years is just too long between visits to The Jewel.
