Taiwan and Belize strengthen ties with sheep and goat production project

Posted: Monday, April 3, 2023. 7:24 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: President Tsai Ing Wen of Taiwan is currently in Belize to strengthen ties between the two countries. During her visit, she toured the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) Breeding Sheep and Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project in Central Farm, Cayo District. The project, which is in its second phase, has resulted in 17,264 sheep being reared by 474 sheep farmers in Belize.

Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai, welcomed President Tsai to the project site and thanked her and the people of Taiwan for their continued support and cooperation in various projects in Belize. He stressed that Belize remains committed to supporting Taiwan’s sovereignty and independence, given the unfounded claims made by mainland China and Guatemala on Taiwan and Belize, respectively.

Mai stated that the longstanding friendship between Belize and Taiwan is founded on the principles of self-determination, territorial integrity, and national sovereignty, which both nations share. He also announced that the government of Belize has submitted a project proposal to TaiwanICDF for another phase of the Sheep and Goat Project to enhance the industry’s capabilities and capacity building.

President Tsai and Minister Mai toured the sheep and goat breeding center, where they fed the lambs. The government of Belize reaffirmed its commitment to work closely with Taiwan to strengthen the sheep and goat industry through bilateral cooperation in agriculture, which will enhance the welfare of the Belizean people.
