Prime Minister John Briceño to Taiwan: ‘Our house is your house’

By Aaron Humes: Invoking late Prime Minister and National Hero George Price’s famous description of Belize in 1981 delivered at the National Assembly on Independence Day, John Briceño emphasized during Monday’s special sitting Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan)’s shared commitment to democracy and internationalism.

Right Honourable Price that day committed that “Belize will stand upright and will do its duty to help bring peace, stability, and prosperity to our region and the wider circles of our planet Earth,” and President Tsai Ing-Wen recently committed that “the greatest duty for all of us living on this land is to do everything we can to give the next generation a better country, and to give the world a better Taiwan.”

The Prime Minister noted that Taiwan has long shared its bounty with Belize and other allies, and from education to trade to women’s development to technology, it has invested in Belize’s future.

The least Belize can do in return, the P.M. said, is to express our “desire to have Taiwan represented in world organizations like the United Nations, not only because the 23 million people who live in Taiwan deserve to be represented, but also so that together we can promote our shared values like democracy, the right of peoples to self-determination and respect for international law. Together we can be a force in the fight against climate change, against all forms of inequality and discrimination, and promote greater peace and security.”

Belize welcomes Taiwan “with open arms”, the P.M. concluded: “Nuestra casa es su casa – our house is your house.”
