‘Teenage girls being reported missing is a national concern,’ says Special Envoy for Families and Children

Posted: Tuesday, April 4, 2023. 8:16 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Of the more than 40 missing persons reports Breaking Belize News (BBN) has published since the start of 2023, teenage girls have made up roughly 1/4 of the amount, an issue that the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children H.E. Rossana Briceño says her office will be looking closely at in the months to come.

Between January 1, 2023 and March 31 2023, our newsroom has published 12 stories referencing missing teen girls, an average of one missing teenage girl per week over the given period. Briceño said that she was first made aware of the issue via our news reports and says that all Belizeans should be concerned about it.

“I strongly believe it is of national concern and it should be a priority,” Briceño said.

She noted that her office will be collaborating with media and other entities going forward to better understand the issue and begin to open discussions on how the matter may be addressed.

We note that, based on data from 2022, there have been several instances of teenage girls escaping from youth facilities.

Many of the missing persons cases involving teenage girls have ended with the runaway being reunited with their family; however, there is still work to be done in terms of understanding the underlying issues connected to the number of runaways.
