Fish or sardine this Easter? Prices as high as $20 per pound

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: It is a decade’s long Christian tradition, but is it still affordable?

Many Belizeans have taken to social media joking that they might opt for sardines instead of fish this Easter season.

Christian tradition has continued over the years to eat fish rather other meats on Good Friday.

It is symbolic because Jesus sacrificed his flesh on what is now known as Good Friday. Therefore, Catholics abstain from eating meaty flesh on this day.

Instead, fish is considered a more favourable type of animal product to eat.’

In addition, Fish has a profound spiritual significance in Christianity.

In the Bible, Jesus performed a symbolic miracle where he fed thousands of people with only 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread.

But, can we still afford to eat fish on Good Friday in 2023?

Prices for fish are usually around $10 and $12 per pound and as anticipated prices are hiked near Easter.

Some residents have reported that during this Holy Week, fish is being sold for $16 per pound and in some areas including the Cayes the price has gone as high as $20 per pound.
