By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On April 4, 2023, Prime Minister John Briceño signed the Statutory Instrument removing taxes from sanitary products.
The Prime Minister now calls on the business community to reduce the prices of these products so that women are able to afford and access them.
“With my signature now finalizing that act, I appeal to the business community to reduce the prices,” Briceño said.
The “Don’t tax my femininity campaign” was launched by Seidi Quetzal and supported and advocated for by Minister of Human Development, Dolores Balderamos Garcia and Special Envoy, Rossana Briceño.
“I would like to thank Ms. Seidi Quetzal, my wife and Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children H. E. Rossana Briceño and Hon. Dolores Balderamos Garcia – Minister of Human Development for taking on this important initiative “Don’t Tax My Femininity” Campaign,” the Prime Minister added.
PM Briceño says that he remains committed to governance and policy-making that achieve gender balance, equity and empowerment.
Belize is now the second country in the region to eliminate taxes on women’s sanitary products.
