By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen thanked the hard-working Taiwan Technical Corps for quietly working in friendly countries for Taiwan’s diplomacy, and letting the world see Taiwan’s professional ‘power for good’.

“Taiwan’s technical team has always been an important part of our diplomatic work. The expertise they provide to their friends is real help that can improve the economy and life of their friends,” President Tsai Ing-wen said in a social media post in reference to her visit to the Sheep and Goat Breeding Center in Central Farm where she was able to feed the sheep.

On Monday, President Tsai visited the Sheep and Goat Breeding Center which is an integral part of the Breeding Sheep and Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project (Sheep Project (Phase II) which is the second phase of the program guided and funded by the Taiwan international Cooperation and development Fund (ICDF). The first phase was the Genetic Improvement in Sheep and Goat Project.

“I felt deeply the enthusiasm and dedication of Taiwan Technical Corps to assist the friendly farming and livestock industry,” President Tsai said.

“Our sheep breeding program not only improves the quality of breeding of sheep farmers in friendly countries, but also allows local farmers and local economies to develop better. Our technical team colleagues have also helped to expand the sheep house, establish standard operating procedures for feeding management, and provide technical training for local sheep farming.

“I also experience feeding sheep myself.”

“I would like to thank the hard-working Taiwan Technical Corps for quietly working in friendly countries for Taiwan’s diplomacy, and letting the world see our professional ‘power for good’”.

As a result of the two sheep and goat programs Belize now has 17,264 head of sheep in Belize being reared by 474 sheep farmers, said Agriculture Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise Jose Abelardo Mai in thanking President Tsai and the Taiwan Government for the assistance acknowledging the able guidance of the Taiwan Technical Mission.

Mai said Belize has a lot to learn from Taiwan’s path to economic independence focusing on developing its primary agriculture production and then proceeding to agro-processing, value adding, and overall industrial development, while moving into small-scale mechanization and modernizing its agricultural services.

Mai said Taiwan’s collaboration has been dynamic and crucial role for Belize since the initial development of the rice industry, followed by the introduction of fruits such as guavas and plums, the strategic support through the agro-processing unit established in Central Farm, and more recently the sheep and goat sub-sectors in Belize.
