By Aaron Humes: This morning Breaking Belize News (BBN) was made aware of long-standing water issues on the island of Caye Caulker which is now connected to supply from Belize Water Services Limited (BWS).
The writer explained that “The water smells horrible and is salty. It’s giving us rash and making us sick. Please help!!” adding that BWS had not addressed the complaints from multiple residents.
We contacted BWS just before noon and were made aware of a statement they planned to issue on the matter.
Essentially, a mechanical issue at the island’s water treatment plant has caused saline levels to rise above normal. The problem was expected to be resolved as of noon today, but BWS advises that residents should not use the supply for purposes of cooking or drinking until further advised though it can be used for other purposes.
In fact, there will be low water pressure until midnight tonight, followed by a full interruption of supply up to 5 a.m. Friday in order to fully restore supply with less saline content. BWS does note that the interruptions will only occur as necessary.
Amid customers’ threats of not paying their water bills, BWS has apologized for what will be a massive inconvenience at the start of the Easter weekend.
