By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Commander of Community policing, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Howell Gillett conducted a meet and greet in Union Town area of Orange Walk.
Gillett and officers met with the family of Dyandre Chi.
On March 25, 2023, Chi was shot in the abdomen after being pursued along with 5 other motorcycle riders along the riverside in Orange Walk Town.
“We thought it important for law enforcement leadership to meet with family members after a police shooting death for several reasons. First and foremost, such a meeting helps to establish trust between law enforcement and the community. The family members of the victim are likely to be angry, hurt, and grieving, and meeting with them in a compassionate and respectful manner can go a long way in demonstrating that the police department cares about their feelings and is committed to transparency and accountability,” Gillett stated.
Gillett says that meeting with the family give the opportunity to answer questions that the family may have and also to dispel rumors.
Gillett says that the Belize Police Department takes these issues seriously and is committed to learning from them.
“By listening to the concerns and suggestions of the family members, law enforcement can identify areas where we can improve training, policies, and procedures in order to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents occurring in the future,” Gillett added.
He joined in extending sympathies to the family and community.
