Man charged for crack possession sentenced to two months in prison over unpaid fine

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man charged for having crack cocaine is spending a two-month sentence at the Belize Central Prison over unpaid fines for previous convictions.

Alfred Franklin appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court charged with a single count of possession of controlled drugs in relation to an undetermined quantity of crack cocaine found in his possession during a police search on Sunday, April 2.

He immediately pleaded guilty to the offense and was fined $75 plus $5 cost of court.

During his hearing the court discovered that Franklin had a fine of $305 for a conviction of not wearing a face mask back in October 2021. He only paid $43 towards the fine so the Magistrate ordered that he make some form of payment forthwith.

He could not and since the debt was going on two years old, the Magistrate ordered that he spend prison time for defaulting on the payment.
