By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes won the ‘grudge match’ 2-0 over Port Layola on Wednesday night at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City.
The match was dead even for the first 70 minutes, but things changed when Mexican Christian Ramírez nailed Port in the 73’. Then Puerto Rican Joel Burgos, who is hot after the two goals for Puerto Rico in the Concacaf Nations League and his brace with Verdes last Sunday, struck again in the 82’ to give Verdes a bigger lead. In his strike, gave the Green Machine the victory in the grudge match.
On March 19, their second match was interrupted at the half by a torrential rain that flooded the Marion Jones pitch. The match was called off and reprogrammed for Wednesday night.
The win pushes Verdes up to the top spot with 24 points, two ahead of the San Pedro Pirates, four over Progresso, and six above Port Layola.
The loss was Port’s second over the last few days having lost 1-0 to Benque Viejo United at the same venue last Sunday.
On the weekend both will hit the road on Saturday.
Now, both teams prepare for the upcoming weekend games on Holy Saturday. Verdes will play their closest rival, the San Pedro Pirates, at Ambergris Caye and Port will travel to Independence to take on Champions Altitude.
