By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police constable Daniel Requena has been cleared of a charge of extortion which he was accused of back in 2017.

Requena appeared in the High Court of Belize on Thursday, where Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft directed the nine-member jury to find him not guilty.

Justice Sandcroft ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove their case against the officer. Requena was jointly charged along with Sgt. Lenancio Bol who died in 2021. The prosecution’s main witness originally testified that she had three friends detained by police over their immigration status and negotiated their release with Sgt. Bol for $800.

However, the witness said that she did not wish to continue the matter against Requena, and without her testimony, the prosecution had no case against him.

Requena maintains that he has always been innocent and was wrongfully accused of participating in the extortion scheme.
