Salvadoran national fails to prove ties to Belize, will be deported back to his home country after serving prison time

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Salvadoran national, 24-year-old Nelson Ortiz has lost his immigration case and will be deported back to his home country.

Ortiz, who was battling in court to prove he had ties to Belize via a child born to him here, appeared in court this week battling a removal order applied for by the Immigration Department on February 13, after he pleaded guilty to a single charge of failure to comply with the conditions of a visitor’s permit.

The Immigration Department was able to prove that Ortiz is a member of a gang and that he was lying to authorities that he had applied for amnesty. Since he had two previous convictions in Belize for immigration offenses, he was fined $3,000 which he was ordered to pay forthwith or spend a year in prison.

Ortiz will be deported after serving out his sentence.
