Tyrone Young charged with murder of Denver Montero as Gracie Rock mass robbery investigation continues

Posted: Thursday, April 6, 2023. 9:41 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Police have arrested and charged 35-year-old Tyrone Devon Young of Belize City for the murder of Denver Denmark Montero, 26, in the commission of a robbery at Gracie Rock, Belize District, on Sunday afternoon.

Young is also charged with attempted murder and use of deadly means of harm on Ryan Kerr.

A post-mortem examination certified Montero’s cause of death to be exsanguination (loss of blood) due to external and internal bleeding caused by multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and left lower leg.

Montero and others were swimming in the Belize River at a popular swimming area, the Gracie Rock Hammock Bridge, when a group of 12 including minors initiated a mass robbery. Things escalated when shots were fired which caused the death of Montero at the scene and injury to Kerr, who was rushed to hospital.

Police responded quickly and detained 12 persons – including 5 minors – in a minivan near Hattieville, also recovering much of the stolen items.

On Wednesday, Young in the presence of his attorney, Ronnel Gonzalez, appeared before Senior Magistrate Baja Shoman where he was read the charges which are indictable and was remanded until June 5. Young’s attorney pointed out his injuries to the Magistrate which he alleges occurred during his detention at the hands of the police.

Later on Wednesday, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams named two other suspects, including the son of Young, who he said they are still looking for to be charged for their alleged involvement: “Police also conducted an intense search of the area where the incident occurred and that led to the recovery of one [nine-millimetre] pistol and several expended shells, the weapon we believe was the weapon of choice used in the commission of the crime and so again good police work in terms of the police work done by CIB [Crimes Investigation Branch] to put the pieces together and quick response from the Hattieville police who did the initial interception led to the arrest and we see how the matter goes from there.”

The presence of minors in the van raised eyebrows. Still, the Commissioner said authorities carefully investigated to determine who exactly was involved: “There were some minors involved or who was in the van but that does not mean they were involved in the crime itself. Yes, the investigation had to be done in a very meticulous manner to ensure that we were able to ascertain what actually transpired and who were the parties who were involved in perpetuating these crimes; the investigation did yield that result and hence the reason all in the vehicle were not charged.”

Regarding reports that some of the detainees were not cooperating with the Department, the Commissioner limited his comments to saying that the court would deal with that issue.
