Posted: Friday, April 7, 2023. 1:07 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: 56-year-old Captain William Swan of the Belize Defence Force, a resident of Santa Elena Town, Cayo District, has been charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, failing to give way to a motor vehicle on a major road, and driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention in the death of Adrian Usher earlier this week.

In court, he was offered and met bail of $6,000 and two sureties and will be presented with disclosure at his next appearance on June 20.

On Saturday night, Usher was on his motorcycle heading to Spanish Lookout when a head-on collision with a pickup truck that was driven by Swan. As a result, Usher was flung to the pavement and died on the spot.

The vehicle Swan was driving belongs to the Department of Youth Services, whose director stated that Swan was on duty at the time of the incident; he has a one-year contract to manage the Mountain Pine Ridge Youth Challenge facility run by the Department.
