By Benjamin Flowers: Belize has joined with other World Health Organization (WHO) member countries to mark the 2023 celebration of World Health Day.

The event, which marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the WHO, is being celebrated this year under the theme “Health for all.”

Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard issued a statement today, noting that the WHO and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) had opened operations in Belize in the 1950s, and highlighting areas where Belize’s health system has improved over the years.

“When we say, ‘Health for All,’ we mean that quality, affordable and comprehensive health care should be accessible to every Belizean, regardless of gender, age, race, socioeconomic status or location in the country,” Bernard said. “In partnership with WHO/PAHO, Belize also celebrates decades of constant effort to address national public health priorities. I am proud to say that from February 2022 to February 2023, there were ZERO maternal institutional deaths (meaning deaths that occurred within a hospital).”

Bernard went on to say that only one pregnant mother died at her home, and said that the cause of death was most likely COVID-19, and said that the situation directly reflects the improved health care being provided within the country’s hospitals.

He also noted that Belize has seen a decrease in the infant mortality rate from 12.2 per 1,000 live births between 2021-2022, to 11.4 percent per 1,000 live births this year, and reminded that the WHO has declared Belize Malaria free.
