Colorful alfombras keeps tradition alive in Cayo

Posted: Friday, April 7, 2023. 4:28 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In Benque Viejo del Carmen, the colorful and intricate alfombras made of sawdust keep the tradition alive today.

Families, friends and community groups gathered along with the Benque House of Culture in the preservation of tradition.

As Christians prepare for the religious procession marking the stations of the cross, the Rotary Club in San Ignacio and the Interact Club of Sacred Heart College also joined hands to create these sawdust tapestries in San Ignacio.

The alfombras are believed to be used as a way to share the teaching of Christianity and the Passion of Christ.

The sawdust tapestries line the route for the procession and brings the community together to create these masterpieces.
