Human Rights Commission urges El Salvador to restore civil rights

Posted: Friday, April 7, 2023. 4:30 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) called on Salvadoran President, Nayib Bukele to restore civil rights in the country, Reuters report.

Since March 2022, the Government of El Salvador implemented a state of emergency that suspended some constitutional rights in an effort to crackdown on violent gangs.

Since then, the measure has been renewed every month.

The measures allow police to detain and imprison suspected gang members.

“IACHR calls on the government of El Salvador to restore the full validity of the rights and guarantees suspended during the last 12 months within the framework of the emergency regime,” the commission said.

However, official data shows that the security policy has contributed to the reduction in murders and violent crimes in the country.
