International News: China announces sanctions on US organizations following Taiwanese President’s meeting with House Speaker

Posted: Friday, April 7, 2023. 1:50 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: According to Yahoo News, China has imposed sanctions on the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and other organizations following a meeting between the US House Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. The meeting took place at the Reagan library in Simi Valley, California, despite warnings from China. McCarthy is among a growing number of foreign legislators who have met with Tsai in support of Taiwan amid Chinese intimidation.

Tensions between the US and China have reached an all-time low due to disputes over the status of Taiwan, as well as issues related to security, technology, and Beijing’s treatment of Hong Kong and Muslim ethnic minorities. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and is opposed to the self-governed island democracy conducting foreign relations.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced sanctions against the Reagan library and the Hudson Institute, a Washington think tank, for “providing a platform and convenience to Taiwan separatist activities.” As a result, Chinese institutions are now prohibited from cooperating or making contact with these organizations.

In response to the sanctions, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, as well as the Hudson Institute, have expressed their continued support for Taiwan and their commitment to standing against China’s aggressive policies.

During her visit to the US, Tsai Ing-wen received a leadership award from the Hudson Institute and spoke about Taiwan’s challenges in regional security. The Chinese Cabinet’s Taiwan Affairs Office has threatened to take resolute measures against Taiwan’s separatist forces and has ramped up efforts to intimidate Taiwan with fighter jets and missile tests.

Despite the increased pressure, Tsai remains steadfast in her goal to increase Taiwan’s global engagement. The US government, while adhering to a “One China” policy, continues to provide Taiwan with the necessary resources to defend itself against any form of aggression.
