By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean Oscar Quiroz of Team 501 Valvoline rode in solo to win 93rd Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic together into Belize City after getting away from his Miami Blazers teammate Jonathan ‘Johnny’ Brown (USA) and L39ion of Los Angeles’ Cory Williams.

Quiroz, from San Ignacio-Santa Elena, Cayo, rode himself into the Belize’s cycling history books riding a superb race crossing the finish line in five hours, 43 minutes, and 19 seconds (3:43:19) at the Digi Park on Barrack Road in Belize City.

Coming in to the City, Williams got away from Brown to take second place over minute later.

Cycling fans had envisioned a heated sprint at the Digi Park on Barrack Road in Belize City as the three approached the City together, but Oscar would have none of it getting away at Mile 3.

The three, along with Kelly Benefits’ Ian McDonald (USA), had escaped the peloton on the way to San Ignacio. They rode into San Ignacio-Santa Elena in complete control with a four-minute lead. However, McDonald who is a teammate of FAL’s Derrick Chavarria at Lees McRae College in the United States, suffered a flat tire right after crossing the Hawkesworth Bridge. By the time he got his tire changed he had fallen off the lead group and couldn’t catch up again.

By Mile 12.5, John DeLong and Patrick Raines were in hot pursuit but were 4:15 behind after five hours and ten minutes.
