By Aaron Humes: Belizean-born Oscar Quiroz has won the 93rd Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic after standing up from almost the start of the race this morning.
A final attack near Mile 3 on the George Price Highway settled the race as Quiroz attacked rather than take up the pace line from American Jonathan Brown and Belizean-American Corey Williams.
Along with American Ian McDonald, the four led the race almost from the start, building a four-minute leading into San Ignacio, but McDonald suffered a mechanical failure of his bicycle and lost pace. A chase group developed between San Ignacio and Belmopan but was unable to close the gap.
Quiroz is the first Belizean winner since Corey’s brother Justin claimed the garland in 2018, and this will ensure a happy Easter for most Belizeans as our patriotic stripe shows for this most important of races.
