By Aaron Humes: Moments after crossing the finish line at BTL Digi Park in Belize City, 93rd Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic winner Oscar Quiroz told reporters that while this was always the plan, he didn’t dare believe it would be him.
Quiroz placed first after a final breakaway from Belizean-American Corey Williams and American Jonathan Brown in that order. He paid tribute to them in his first post-race interview.
Quiroz said he gave God all the glory followed by teammate Brown and Williams, who he said vowed to ensure a Belizean crossed the finish line first today.
For his part, Brown said the race had been hard for him with the heat but he is pleased with his third-place finish.
Fourth place went to evergreen American John DeLong and fifth to Mexican Oswaldo Mora. Other notable finishers include Henry Lee in seventh, Giovanni Lovell in ninth and former champion Bill Elliston rounding out the top ten.
