International News: Holy Week celebrations limited by Nicaraguan Government

Posted: Saturday, April 8, 2023. 9:43 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Friday, Catholics in Nicaragua held processions and stations of the cross on church grounds and inside churches, the Associated Press reports.

Nicaraguan President, Daniel Ortega had imposed a ban on public demonstrations.

The Ortega Government has also come strong against the church and sentenced a bishop to 26 years in prison.

Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes said that all Holy Week celebrations were held near the churches.

“In absolutely every parish there were celebrations,” Brenes said.

However, celebrations were better in the past when many would gather at the Managua Cathedral.

The Vatican also closed its Embassy in Nicaragua last month after Ortega’s government proposed suspending diplomatic relations, the latest episode in a years-long crackdown on the church.
