By Breaking Belize News Staff: Taiwan’s Defense Ministry reported that 71 jets and nine vessels from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) were detected approaching Taiwan on April 8th as part of the Chinese air and naval military exercises around the island. The exercises were announced by China earlier in the day, taking place from April 8-10 in the maritime area and airspace around Taiwan.

According to Beijing, the drill serves as a warning to Taiwan’s independence supporters and a measure to protect China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The announcement followed Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s meeting with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other lawmakers in Los Angeles during a transit visit to the US on her way back from Guatemala and Belize.

As reported by UrduPoint News, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry tweeted, “71 PLA aircraft and 9 vessels were detected by 16:00 (UTC+8) (08:00 GMT) on April 8th. 45 of the detected aircraft had crossed northern, central, and southern median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered our southwest ADIZ (air defense identification zone).”

Taiwan has been governed independently from mainland China since 1949, and while it has its own elected government, it has not declared independence. Beijing views the island as its province and opposes any official contacts of foreign states with Taipei, considering Chinese sovereignty over the island indisputable.
