A second gold for Belize’s Demetrie Meyers; disappointed he didn’t break a record

Posted: Monday, April 10, 2023. 11:22 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: When your biggest concern after winning gold on the track is not breaking the meet record, it speaks to a dominant performance.

Young Belizean-American Demetrie Meyers dusted his competitors in the Under-17 Boys’ 3,000 meters on Sunday at the 50th Carifta Games in Nassau, Bahamas, finishing in nine minutes, eight point four seconds – slightly off his personal best and behind the meet record held by Jamaica of eight minutes, 46.48 seconds. He added a second gold medal to his victory on Saturday in the 1,500 meters in the same category and is also participating in the 800 meters – all “middle-distance” events in sprinting parlance.

Interviewed afterwards, Meyers said his hamstring “started to really die” about 800 meters, which hampered his pursuit of the record.

But he is nonetheless proud of himself and for Belize: “It means Belize is on the uprise and there is more greatness to come; Belize is here to stay.”

Meyers is one of the three Meyers children – the others being Daniel and Mallory – coached by their father and Belize Athletics Association press officer Gregory Meyers, out of Haverford, Pennsylvania. The other participating athletes are Andre Armstrong of Belize City and Joas Mejia of Punta Gorda Town who is in the field for the long and triple jump.
