By Aaron Humes: A police officer and a participant in the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic had an unfortunate accident at the roundabout in Blackman Eddy leading into Spanish Lookout that left both injured.
Kent Bob Gabourel sustained, as he wrote in a social media post, “minor road rashes, a bust over eye, shoulder and neck pain, [but] no broken bones,” while according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, the officer is ‘OK’ after being taken to hospital following the collision.
As to what caused the accident, we understand the officer was acting as traffic control when Gabourel came on the curbside looking to gain time across the highway when they collided. As one might expect, he says he is “emotionally broken into a thousand pieces like a puzzle” by the unfortunate end of his day, worryingly describing himself as “hurt and in a dark place.”
Nonetheless, Gabourel wishes to follow up with the officer at some point.
Reports suggested a bull crossed the road without incident as cyclists passed through Ontario village, and some adventurous types tried to run alongside the cyclists offering support and refreshment.
