Accused San Ignacio home invaders Ernest Thompson and Isiah Azueta charged with murder, aggravated burglary

By Aaron Humes: Ernest Thompson, 59, of Santa Elena Town, and Isiah Azueta, 26, of San Ignacio Town, have been jointly charged with the murder of William Maxwell Smith, a retiree of Tres Puntas, San Ignacio Town, during a home invasion on Easter Sunday, April 9.

Thompson and Azueta have also been jointly charged with aggravated burglary, dangerous harm, and two counts of robbery. Thompson, also known as Florencio Talbert, was separately charged with attempted murder, keeping firearms and ammunition without a gun license and handling stolen goods while Azueta was hit with additional firearm and ammunition charges.

William Maxwell Smith returned to Belize in February and was here to oversee the construction of a resort in the Kontiki area, where he also resided. On the morning of April 9, a pair of thieves entered Smith’s sprawling compound and proceeded to burglarize his home. During the incident, multiple shots were fired, resulting in one of the intruders being injured and Smith being mortally wounded; the other was injured in a shoot-out with police.
