By Benjamin Flowers: Both men involved in the fatal home invasion in San Ignacio that claimed the life of 72-year-old American national William Smith had also been shot, police say.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said that police responded to a call of an aggravated burglary in the Tres Puntas area on Easter Sunday, and were fired upon by the perpetrators when they arrived. Williams said that police returned fire during the engagement, hitting one while the other managed to escape.
“At this time two suspects had gunshot injuries. One of them we believe was shot by the homeowner, but ballistics is going to confirm that, and the other we believe was shot by police while he was escaping from the scene,” Williams said.
The suspect shot by police was shot in the leg and subsequently subdued by the officers. Officers conducted a search of the house following the ordeal which led to the discovery of Smith’s body, which Williams said had apparent gunshot wounds.
The second suspect was later apprehended by police, and both men are detained pending charges.
