By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Shiveluch volcano erupted, spewing an ash cloud over 108,000 square kilometres (41,700 square miles) melting snow, Reuters reports.
Authorities in Russia issued warnings of mudflows along a nearby highway and villages were covered in 3.5 inches of ash, the deepest in 60 years.
Danila Chebrov, Director of the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey said the ash reached 20 kilometres high.
“The volcano was preparing for this for at least a year… and the process is continuing though it has calmed a little now,” Chebrov said.
And only 1 day after the volcano erupted, a 5.8 mag earthquake struck off the coast of Kamchatka.
Scientists noted that the volcano was still erupting 15 hours after it began to erupt.
