By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belize city resident, 36-year-old Martin Faber has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being unable to post bail following charges of escaping lawful custody and assaulting a police officer.
Faber had been taken to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, charged with an additional offense, possession of a pipe (for the purpose of smoking drugs) but immediately pleaded guilty to that charge and was fined $75 plus $5 cost of court for that offense. He has until May 31 to pay that fine or he will spend two weeks in prison for defaulting.
He pleaded not guilty to the other two charges and was granted bail in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same. His case was then adjourned for June 6. However, during the proceedings the Magistrate learned that Faber owed the court a total of $464, from two previous convictions; one for common assault and the other for failure to wear a face mask.
Faber was unable to pay off those fines and was remanded until he is able to do so. He was initially arrested for being in possession of a crack pipe on Thursday, April 6.
