Charges coming for ‘conspirators’ in William Maxwell Smith murder/home invasion

Posted: Wednesday, April 12, 2023. 9:34 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Twin Towns residents Ernest Thompson and Isiah Azueta face a slew of charges in relation to the home invasion and subsequent murder of retiree William Maxwell Smith on Easter Sunday in the Kontiki area of San Ignacio, including murder and aggravated burglary.

But according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, the investigation is not done yet, as others will be charged in relation to the “conspiracy” police have identified that led to the burglary of which Thompson and Azueta are the alleged perpetrators.

The Commissioner told reporters today, “We are still trying as best as we can to gather more evidence as it relates to those persons who may be the conspirators. There are other persons who play very important roles leading up to that particular incident and we have identified who those persons are. But, right now we are working on the evidence, and hopefully, by the end of this week we should be able to lay charges against the other persons, jointly with the other two for conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary.”

Commissioner Williams said the officer injured during the incident is out of the hospital with non-life-threatening but serious injuries that will require him to see a bone specialist in Belize City as there is still a bullet lodged delicately in an arm. He took the opportunity to point out the necessity of some sort of health insurance coverage for officers who put their lives on the line and sustain an injury while on the job and confirmed the Department is assisting this officer with those medical expenses.
